Brazil, June 2012

Greetings from your co-workers to the Portuguese-Speaking World.

Great things the Lord has done and even greater things He will do among us! Since I (Jeff) arrived in Brazil on May 3, the Lord has done great things; however we believe He will do even greater things for His honor and glory.

On May 6, I became the interim minister at the Pirituba Church, therefore on April I, asked Gerson, the only elder at the Pirituba Church, to ask the congregation if they would agree in changing their Friday night service to Tuesday night. This way I could preach at Pirituba on Tuesday, at Sao Mateus on Wednesday, at Jundiai on Thursday and at Campo Limpo Paulista on Friday. They agreed and I've been preaching at these 4 locations every week; this way I am able to maintain contact with these congregations.

On Friday night May 4, I went to the last Friday night service at Pirituba before changing to Tuesday; there were 7 people there. On Saturday, May 5, we had a board meeting at Pirtuba where I discovered that the church has 33 members, however only 22 were attending on Sundays, and 5 on Fridays. I was surprised to learn that the church had taken a loan at a local bank, without a congregation meeting, and still owe $8,500 (US Dollars). Another surprise was to learn that the church has an active debt with the municipal government of $2,700 (US Dollars) from not getting building permits, past due taxes and a loud sound fine. Adding the monthly payments for the loan, the municipal fine, electricity and water, the church monthly financial responsibility is $1,200 (US Dollars). Therefore, I became the interim minister at the Pirituba Church on Sunday, May 6, knowing that church has all these financial responsibilities, does not have many active members, half of the lights of the church were burned out, and have not finished the construction, because it does not have the financial resources to finish. To finish the construction we need $4,500 (US Dollars). However, by God’s grace after a month the attendance on Sunday is over 50 and on Tuesday over 30 and the income in May was close to $2,000 (US Dollars). We serve a mighty God!

On Saturday, May 5, I had the opportunity to have lunch at a Churrascaria (Brazilian Steak House) in Campinas with David Giles (CMF–Christian Mission Fellowship), Tom Moen (Mountain Christian Church), Vinicius Varanda (Minister at CMF Church in Campinas), Ruben Daniel (Minister at River of Life Churches in Jundiai and Campo Limpo) and several Brothers and Sisters from the Campinas Church. Brother Ruben has worked closely with Vinicius, and the River of Life church leaders have participated in the CMF Community Health Evangelism (CHE) training.

God has blessed us with the opportunity to preach at the Jundiai Church at 9:30am, at the Bom Retiro (Korean) Church at 1:30pm and at the Pirituba Church at 6pm on Sundays.

Our house in Brazil has only two small bedrooms and since Monica’s parents moved to our house in 2010 we were in need of an extra room, therefore we decided to transform the garage into a bedroom, in order to transform the garage we had to build a storage room. With a lot of hard work we were able to finish, and started using the new bedroom a week after Monica and Isaac arrived in Brazil.

On the last week of May, between 10pm and 2am, we worked at fixing all the electric and sound issues at the Pirituba Church; now the church has all the lights working and a sound system that is pleasing to hear. God is good!

Brazil River of Life promoted a Children's Outreach at Varzea Paulista on May 12, and also on June 16, a Women's Tea on May 19, and a Couple’s outreach on June 16 at Jundiai.

The “Hands On” Bible College meets on the last Saturday of the month; on May 26, I taught on Church History and Stone-Campbell Movement.

On June 3, we had a celebration for Monica’s father, Odelmo, retirement from the ministry at the Pirituba Church, however as he was driving to the church with Monica’s mother, Elzi and Isaac in the car with him, he ran over a 42 year-old man on the highway. We had over 200 people at the church, ministers from the churches in Campinas, Campo Limpo Paulista, Jundiai, Piracicaba and Sao Paulo, however Monica’s parents never arrived. We left the police station at 3:30am and we finally arrived home at 5am. Thank God, Monica’s parents and Isaac were not injured, however the car was towed. We do not have information about the man, the police told us not to go after any information, that they will get in touch with us.

We have personally met with every minister, the elders and other ministry leaders at Bom Retiro, Campo Limpo, Jundiai and Sao Mateus Churches. The leadership at these congregations is strong and is doing a great job. We are training new leaders at the Pirituba Chruch.

We thank the Lord for Isaac’s 15th birthday on June 16.

Prayer Requests: Please pray,

• We are training 3 new elders at the Pirituba Church; we need a strong leadership at this church.

• May 23 at 4pm, we have a Women's Outreach at Campo Limpo Paulista Church.

• May 23 at 7:30pm, we have a Couples' Outreach at Pirituba Church.

• May 30 from 1pm to 8pm, Monica and I will teach at the “Hands On” Bible College.

• We need God’s grace to be able to speak from Tuesday to Friday and on Sundays every week, plus the outreaches, teaching, leadership meetings and training, and all the work at the Pirituba Church.

• We have not had a break since we arrived in Brazil; therefore, we will take 4 days' vacation from June 26-29.

• Our ticket expenses to come to Brazil was $6,101.83, and so far, we have only received $2,640.00 for this purpose, so we still need $3,461.83.

Thanks for your prayers, and please continue to pray for us!

May 18, 2012
Dear Prayer Warriors,
I (Jeff) arrived in Brazil on May 3 and my internet access has been very limited! I had to purchase and install an antenna at our house so we can have internet access. I am testing the antenna to see what the best position is so we can have the best signal.
During these 15 days that I have been in Brazil, I have preached at the Pirituba church 5 times, Sao Mateus Church 2 times, Judiai Church 2 times, Campo Limpo Paulista 2 times and at the Bom Retiro Church (Korean) once and I have had 5 leadership meetings. In the mean time I been transforming our garage in a bedroom so when Monica and Isaac arrives on Monday May 21, Monica and I will have a bedroom. Monica parents been living at our house and they are using our bedroom. Between now and Monday we need to finish the celling, paint the room and install the bathroom fixtures.
I have a busy weekend ahead! Two leadership meetings, preach on Sunday morning at Jundiai and in the evening at Pirituba. I will conduct two church meeting one at Jundiai and one at Campo Limpo Paulista Church on Sunday so they can vote their new board for the next 2 years and vote new Elders.
I will send a more detail report as soon as the internet access is fully established.
Please pray for:
·         a safe trip for Monica and Isaac to Brazil, they leave the USA on Sunday May 20 and arrive on Monday morning.
·         me so the Lord will keep using me for His honor and glory.
·         for the funds so we can cover the tickets expenses for this trip. We need $6,101.83 and we have received $2,640.00 for this purpose, we still need $3,461.83.
Thanks for your prayers!

APRIL 2012

Dear Prayer Partners,
Greeting from your co-workers to the Portuguese-Speaking World!
We have exciting news to share with you! We are counting the days, hours and minutes to go to Brazil and we need your prayers!
I (Jeff) will be leaving to Brazil on May 3, Monica and Isaac leave on May 20, and Roger will accompany the Experience Brazil 2012 Team on July 20. This summer I will be staying in Brazil for 15 weeks, Monica and Isaac will return with me in August and Roger will return with the Experience Brazil 2012 Team.
Here are a few of our goals for this summer:
1. I will be the interim minister at the Pirituba Church. Monica’s father will retire from his obligations at the Pirtuba Church and I’ll be assuming that responsibility on May 6. The Pirutba Church is down to 30 in attendance every Sunday, in 2004 when we left the Pirituba Church to plant the Campo LImpo Paulista Church, the Pirituba Church had over 180 members and averaged 220 on Sundays.
2. Work and build a strong leadership at Pirituba Church, and help them search for God’s will for a new minister.
3. Visit during the mid-week services the BROLM (Brazil River of Life Ministers) Churches in the Southeast.
4. Teach at the “Hands On” Bible College.
5. Promote Children, Youth, Women's and Men's outreaches.
6. Couples Retreat.
7. Leadership Seminars and Meetings.
8. Receive Dr. David Eubanks, elder at SHCC (Seymour Heights Christian Church) and former Johnson President, July 14-21.
9. Receive Experience Brazil 2012 Team July 21-30.
10. Participate in the Pre-World Convention in Brasilia July 24.
11. Participate in the World Convention in Goiania, July 25-29.
12. Take a 5 day-long' family vacation.
We need your prayers!
We have a full schedule as you can see below; we will be preaching, teaching, speaking, counseling, visiting, leading etc. We need to be covered by your prayers!
We are hoping to raise a team of at least 100 Prayer Warriors that will commit to pray for us daily, during this summer! We will send weekly updates and prayer requests; we will place pictures and updates also at the BROLM blog (http://brazilriveroflifeministries.blogspot.com/) and at our Facebook page (Jeff e Monica Fife).
If you would like to commit to pray for us during this summer, as we work for 15 weeks in Brazil, please send a reply message to fife@brolm.org or rlm_fifes@hotmail.com; we would like to make a list of our prayer warriors. So please, send us a message if you would like to be our Prayer Partner this summer.
Here is our first prayer request!
We have purchased, by faith, the airplane tickets. We will fly from Tri-Cities, TN, to Guarulhos, Sao Paulo, from Sao Paulo to Brasilia, ride the bus from Brasilia to Goiania, and fly from Goiania back to Sao Paulo. The international tickets cost $5,564.59 and the national ones $537.24 a total of $6,101.83. We have received a gift from SHCC of $2,000.00 for this purpose, therefore we still need $4,101.83 to cover these expenses. Praise the Lord - our cup is 1/3 full! Please pray that God will touch people hearts to help us cover these expenses.
Thank you very much for your prayer and financial support!

Dear Friends and Family,
Greetings from your coworkers to the Portuguese-Speaking World!
Happy New Year! 2012 started "full blast"! We are excited with all that God is already doing, and with all the plans for this year.
2012 BUDGET AND 2011 FINANCIAL AUDIT REPORT
If you have not received BRoLM 2012 Yearly Budget, BRoLM 2011 Financial Audit Report and would like to receive it, please send note to fife@brolm.org and we will be happy to send you a copy. BRoLM was very blessed with your financial and prayer support in 2011; however at the end of the year there was a net loss of $2,963.09. You can see the detailed report of all the 2011 gifts and expenses at the 2011 Financial Audit Report, and please consider a special gift to help us eliminate this financial deficit. Thanks!
EXPERIENCE BRAZIL 2012
We are inviting you to come and “Experience Brazil” with us! As many of you know, the Stone-Campbell Movement World Convention will be in Brazil. This is the first time this convention is being held in a country that does not speak English; however all the meetings will be bilingual (English/Portuguese). Jeff is the liaison/advisor between the World Convention international board and the Brazilian board. Mônica is the president for the Global Women Connecting, a women’s conference that will be held during the World Convention. A Youth Conference will be held also during the World Convention. We are inviting you to come to Brazil for 10 days, visit the BRoLM churches in Sao Paulo, come to Brasilia for the pre-convention and to Goiania for the convention. We would love to have you come with us, and we would like to ask the churches that support BRoLM to consider sending at least one representative from your church to “Experience Brazil” with us! If you would like more detail, please, send an e-mail to fife@brolm.org, and we will send a brochure or access this link to see the brochure: http://worldconvention.org/PDF/BRLM%20Tour%20-%20EXPERIENCE%20BRAZIL%202012.pdf

Already a few people have confirmed their visit to BRoLM work and World Convention, Brazil 2012.
• July 14-30 – Dr. David Eubanks (Elder at Seymour Heights Christian Church, and former Johnson University president).
• July 20-30 – Johnson City, TN, First Christian Church Missions Team (Dr. Pat Bonner, LeAnne Blackmore, Nikki Hunt, and Bob & Sabine Schnelle).
We can take a team of up to 40 people to “Experience Brazil” this year. This is a great opportunity, don’t miss it!
BROLM 2011 RECEIPTS
In the past, BRoLM has sent an annual receipt of all the gifts received during the year to our supporters; however, the law has changed and BRoLM has to send monthly receipts through the year. In 2011 BRoLM sent monthly receipts for tax-exempt purposes if for any reason you have misplaced your receipts, please ask for a copy and BRoLM will send a copy to you. Please hold on to your 2012 receipts!
BRAZIL NEWS
In Brazil, the churches have a special New Year's Eve service; they meet on Dec 31 at 10pm for worship. At midnight, they pray, and after midnight they have a big feast. The Campo Limpo Paulista and Jundiai churches did the service together at Campo Limpo, and Brother Ruben baptized Jessica, a young woman from Campo Limpo.
During the first 2 weeks of the year, the churches in Brazil meet for 12 days consecutively; each day represents one month of the year. They call it "12 Days of Purpose"; it is like giving the first fruits of the year to God. This year the churches in Africa participated also in the 12 Days of Purpose. Jeff wrote 12 sermons, based on 2 Corinthians entitled “Believe and Never Give Up.” On the 12th day the churches in Campo Limpo Paulista and Jundiai got together for a big Brazilian “Churrasco” (barbecue), and the church in Sao Mateus had a nice lunch.
When the Carraozinho Church moved its new location last year, they moved to Sao Mateus (Saint Mathew) on the east side of Sao Paulo; from now on we will call the church that was at Carraozinho, Sao Mateus, because they are not anymore at Carazinho.
The Campo Limpo Paulista Church celebrated its 7th anniversary on Jan 26. It is amazing how time flies; it seems like yesterday when we were there having the first service at Campo Limpo. The worship teams from the churches in Jundiai, Sao Mateus, Pirituba and Campinas sang and Brother Vinicius from Campinas spoke.
Brother Ruben & Edna, Jose & Ana, and Marcio & Andrea attended the Community Health Evangelism (CHE) training in January. CHE is a strategy of work among urban poor that helps them to identify their needs, their God-given resources, and some possible solutions to improve their situations. Spiritual teaching releases the power of Christ into the communities as people understand God’s purpose and vision for their lives. Cal Bianco is responsible for CHE in Brazil, and we are scheduling a date for him to give the CHE training seminar to the BRoLM churches in Sao Paulo area. Soon BRoLM will promote CHE training for the BRoLM churches in the Centro-West and Northeast Brazil. The training received by the three couples in January is already being used at Mursa, Varzea Paulista.
The home discipleship groups started to meet again in February. Jeff wrote in January, 6 months' worth of material to use in these weekly meetings. This material is being used, both in Brazil and in Africa.
MOZAMBIQUE NEWS
700 Students are enrolled for the 2012 School Year at Hope Grade School. Over 1000 wanted to study at the school, however the school needs to build more classes.
Every month the church leaders come to Hope Mission in Nampula for a leadership and Bible training. When they go back to their districts, they pass on what they have learned.
The church at Hope Mission gathers every day for prayer meetings and on Sunday morning, they have Sunday Bible School Classes (new converts, newly baptized, leaders, women, and children); after Sunday School they have a Worship Service with Communion.
Juracema teaches the Mamas (Women Class). Juracema wrote “it has been very nice to see what God is doing in their lives; the women have talked about very personal things in their lives and they have found in me someone with whom they can share their pain and suffering, I praise God for this opportunity and pray that He will use me to advise them. I have emphasized the need they have to leave behind the sufferings of the past: slavery, war and the need to look to the future and the hope that Christ has for their lives.
The new cafeteria is being build and thank God, that it has rained in Mozambique, so there is much-needed water for the construction

May the richest blessings of our Lord Jesus Christ abound in your life and family.
Your prayers and financial support are vital for BRLM! Please continue to pray for us - we need all the prayers we can get!
God is good, He is among us, and He is acting!
In His love and service,                                                  Jeff, Monica, Roger and Isaac Fife

December 2011

(Click on the Picture to ENLARGE them)

Dear Friends and Family,

Greetings from your coworkers to the Portuguese-Speaking World!

One more year is ending and our hearts are full of gratitude for all the Lord has done through BRoLM (Brazil River of Life Ministries) during 2011. We would like to share a few highlights and prayer concerns that we have not had the opportunity to share during this year. Please give thanks with us and also pray with us!

BRAZIL:

In January 2011, Brother Edson decided to stop pastoring the Campo Limpo Church; therefore the elders from Campo Limpo and Jundiai decided to ask Brother Ruben Daniel to preach at both churches. The church in Campo Limpo has Sunday and Friday night services and the Jundiai has Sunday morning and Thursday night services. Both churches have Tuesday night home groups. Ruben is also responsible for the “Hands On” Bible College, that by God’s grace and the generosity of His people, resumed classes in July with 21 students. They meet every third Saturday of the month, and they have studied 10 subjects, a total of 30 credits from July to December. Since it is summer in Brazil there will be no classes in January; classes resume in February. Please pray for Ruben and his family, he stepped down from being the principal at the high school where he works, and went back to class to teach Math so he can dedicate more time to the two churches. His wife Edna manages a cell phone store, and they have two daughters.

In January 2011, BRoLM started a monthly outreach to the children at Mursa at Varzea Paulista, Sao Paulo. Varzea Paulista is a city between the cities of Campo Limpo Paulista and Jundiai; some members of the churches located in those two cities live there. This monthly evangelistic event for the children led to a weekly home group for their parents starting in July. Brother Marcio and his wife Andrea Gut are reasonable for the work at Mursa. Members and leaders from the Campo LImpo and Jundiai churches corroborate with this outreach, in which our goal is to plant a church in this location. The monthly children's outreach has an average of 50 children and the weekly home group about 15 adults. Please pray for the Mursa Work; most of the people at this location were born into a Catholic family, but they do not go to church. However, they are resistant to any non-Catholic churches, and another factor is that 70% of the adults are alcoholics and 25% a drug addicts. Pray for Brother Marcio and Andrea and the volunteers that help at the outreaches. Brother Marcio is a co-owner of a brick factory, his wife is the office manager at the brick factory, and they have two children, a boy and a girl.
In March 2011, the Carraozinho church had to move to a new location, and they were able to find a lot better place to meet. Brother Gilberto is responsible for the work at Carraozinho. This church has a unique characteristic of having over 70% of its member’s teenagers/youth, ages between 12 and 22. Brother Gilberto has a drywall plaster business and his wife Patricia is a middle school teacher; they have two children a girl and a boy.

The Pirituba church has struggled the last two years it has not grown much. We feel that the Lord is raising some younger leadership, Some of the children and youth we worked with back in the 90’s have now they became men and are married. We are praying that they will take more of a leading position during 2012. Monica’s father Odelmo is responsible for the work in Pirituba and he believes that it is time for him to pass on the baton. Please pray that the Lord will raise up the person that He wants to lead this congregation.

During 2011 BRoLM had the opportunity to promote 14 children, 6 youth outreaches, 6 women's teas, 6 men's breakfasts, a youth camp, and a women's conference. It was a busy year, but a blessed one too!

MOZAMBIQUE

God used BRoLM to help raise the funds so the Hope School in Mozambique could have desks; every classroom has desks - no more students sitting on the floor. Praise the Lord. The school is on vacation and this month the parents are registering their children; last year the school had over 700 students. The ministry in Mozambique has now several girls living at the school; these girls were abandoned by their parents. This month they are learning how to take care of their clothes; it is interesting to think that they have to learn all the basic things of life since they did not have any education before. We could say they did not have anything at all before.

Fife Family

Please pray for Mônica; she has had suffered many headaches through this year and it is getting worse. She's been in bed without being able to function since Dec 25. This time the headache was like the ones she had before removing the tumor; no medication was able to alleviate the pain. Usually when she has a headache crisis, it lasts 3 days and she is in bed for one day. This time we are on the fourth day and she still in bed.
Roger is doing very well at Milligan and Isaac is doing very well at Elizabethton High School.

Jeff just finished writing 12 sermons that will be preached at the BRoLM churches in Brazil and will be used at the churches in Africa, too. Every year the churches meet every day for the first 12 days of the year to give the Lord the first fruits of the year; each day represents one month of the year. The theme for 2012 is Never Give Up, a series of messages from 2 Corinthians. Now Jeff is writing the Discipleship material that is used weekly at the Home Groups for the next 5 months.

It seems like an eternity; however, Jeff and Monica just finished the third semester at Emmanuel and Milligan. Starting in January, Monica will be a Junior. “We miss the full time mission field work.”

SOME GOALS FOR 2012:

  • Continue to promote all the children, youth, women's, and men's outreaches.
  • Continue with the weekly home group discipleship.
  • Continue work towards planting more churches.
  • Continue with the “Hands On” Bible College.
  • Spend the Summer in Brazil (May-August).
  • Take a team from the USA to visit the BRoLM work in Sao Paulo and participate of the World Convention in Goiania. It will be 10 days in Brazil (July 20-30) the approximate cost is $3,000.00 per person including airfares, hotels, meals, visa fees, and World Convention registration.
